Traceability Requirements in Seafood and Perishable Distribution
Beyond surviving the physical environment, cold-chain labels typically carry the same kind of lot- and batch-level traceability data required in other regulated industries, catch or production date, lot number, processing facility, and sometimes species or origin information for seafood specifically, given increasingly strict country-of-origin and sourcing traceability expectations in the industry. That data needs to remain both human-readable and barcode-scannable through the product’s full cold-chain journey, which means the label’s durability requirements and its data-accuracy requirements have to be solved together, a label that survives the freezer but loses barcode contrast from condensation exposure has still failed its traceability function.
